Starling was established in 2010 through the adoption of the Big Lake Neighbourhood Two Neighbourhood Structure Plan (NSP). It was originally considered neighbourhood 2 within the structure plan. Starling features quick possession homes, public lots and custom homes by builders such as Art Homes, Averton, Blackstone Homes, C2 Homes and others. 

Starling is bounded on the north by 137 Avenue, east by Ray Gibbon Drive, south by Anthony Henday Drive and west by 199 Street. Nearby natural attractions include Big Lake, Horseshoe Lake and Lois Hole Provincial Park.

Due to proximity to nature reserves, lakes and wetlands, Starling is home to many bird species, hence the name "Starling", which is derived from one of those species.
