Riverbend was established in 1972 through Edmonton City Council's adoption of the Riverbend-Terwillegar Heights District Outline Plan. In 1979, the city council adopted the Riverbend Area Structure Plan to guide further development of the southern portion of Riverbend. Currently, Riverbend real estate consists of new additions, refurbished and rebuilt homes. Although Riverbend can be considered one of the most expensive communities in Edmonton due to its upscale homes, there are new budget housing options in the southern part of the neighborhood. The Riverbend residential area is home to 9 neighborhoods including, Brander Gardens, Rhatigan Ridge, Bulyea Heights, Ramsay Heights, Henderson Estates, Ogilvie Ridge, Carter Crest, Falconer Heights, and Brookside.
