Rideau Park History

The name Rideau Park comes from Rideau Hall, the official residence in Ottawa of the Governor-General of Canada. Rideau sits on land annexed to the city of Edmonton in 1959. A huge chunk of Rideau Park's residential construction occurred during the 1970s. This accounts for just over 80%. Most of the remaining residences were constructed during the 1960s. 

Apartments take up just over half (54%) of the residences, while apartment-style condominiums take up about 12%. The remaining are mostly single-family homes and a few duplexes.

Rideau Park is bounded on the north by Whitemud Drive, west by 111 Street, east by Calgary Trail and south by 40 Avenue.

Rideau Park Recreational Activities

Rideau Park is the only neighbourhood park. It features plenty of green open space perfect for taking walks, taking your kids to play outside or having a picnic. The neighbourhood is represented by The Duggan Community League, headquartered in the neighbouring community of Duggan. There are two parks in Duggan, Duggan Park and Charles Anderson Park. 

Duggan Park features a playground, soccer field and baseball field. Charles Anderson Park is more of a green open space which is great for picnics or relaxation.

The community league maintains a community hall and hockey rink in Duggan Park. They also have several community programs including, soccer tournaments, girl guides, ice skating and scouts. Another recreational spot is Whitemud Creek Ravine which is only a few minutes to the west. Confederation Leisure centre is situated in neighbouring Royal Gardens. The facility features an aquatic centre with a saltwater pool, large whirlpool, steam room, and a fitness centre with an indoor ice arena, outdoor tennis courts, sports fields, and a running track.

Golf enthusiasts are only minutes away from The Derrick Golf and Winter Club, situated only a few blocks away to the west. The 18-hole golf course features a well-maintained course and golf professionals who offer training lessons.
