Rhatigan Ridge History

Rhatigan Ridge is named after Thomas Rhatigan, a local farmer who was known for his high-quality wheat and oats. He won the World Oat King award at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto in 1953, 1966, and 1970. The land that is now Rhatigan Ridge was annexed to the city of Edmonton in 1960. The Riverbend-Terwillegar Heights Outline Plan of 1961 included the development plan of Rhatigan Ridge neighbourhood. About 66% of the residences in the area were built during the 1980s and another 29% were built during the 1990s. A few residences (about 4%) were constructed in 1980 or earlier. Rhatigan Ridge is bounded on the north by 40 Avenue, east by Terwillegar Drive, south by Rabbit Hill Road, and west by the North Saskatchewan River Valley.

Rhatigan Ridge features lots of recreational amenities. There are three parks in the neighbourhood: Mary Lobay Park, Thomas Rhatigan Park and Ronning Street Neighbourhood Park. They offer plenty of green spaces for relaxation, playing and picnics. Just outside the neighbourhood to the west, residents have access to the river valley trails systems, green spaces and hiking spots. The trails lead to Terwillegar Park, which features a canoe launch, hiking and cycling trails, green spaces by the river and trails for dog walking.
