Ramsay Heights History
Ramsay Heights is named after Walter Ramsay. He moved to Edmonton in 1899, and became principal at McKay Avenue School, and subsequently Queen's Avenue School. He also became the first florist in Edmonton. The land that is now Ramsay Heights was annexed to the city of Edmonton in 1960. In 1969, the Riverbend-Terwillegar Heights Outline Plan included the development plan of the Ramsay Heights neighbourhood. The neighbourhood was subdivided in the early 1970s. It is bounded on the north by 51 Avenue, east by Whitemud Drive and Terwillegar Drive, south by Rhatigan Ridge neighbourhood and west by North Saskatchewan River Valley.
Ramsay Heights Recreational Activities
Ramsay Heights residents have access to lots of recreational amenities. Ramsay Park features a skate park, soccer field, playground, picnic tables, baseball diamonds and a toboggan hill. More green space is available in the nearby river valley. The valley features extensive trails that lead to Terwillegar Park, where residents can access canoe launches, dog walking, bird watching, biking trails and much more. The trails also lead to other areas including, Promontory Point, a hiking area with green space by the water; and Terwillegar Park Footbridge, which features more natural vistas.
