Ramsay Heights History

Ramsay Heights is named after Walter Ramsay. He moved to Edmonton in 1899, and became principal at McKay Avenue School, and subsequently Queen's Avenue School. He also became the first florist in Edmonton. The land that is now Ramsay Heights was annexed to the city of Edmonton in 1960. In 1969, the Riverbend-Terwillegar Heights Outline Plan included the development plan of the Ramsay Heights neighbourhood. The neighbourhood was subdivided in the early 1970s. It is bounded on the north by 51 Avenue, east by Whitemud Drive and Terwillegar Drive, south by Rhatigan Ridge neighbourhood and west by North Saskatchewan River Valley.

Ramsay Heights Recreational Activities

Ramsay Heights residents have access to lots of recreational amenities. Ramsay Park features a skate park, soccer field, playground, picnic tables, baseball diamonds and a toboggan hill. More green space is available in the nearby river valley. The valley features extensive trails that lead to Terwillegar Park, where residents can access canoe launches, dog walking, bird watching, biking trails and much more. The trails also lead to other areas including, Promontory Point, a hiking area with green space by the water; and Terwillegar Park Footbridge, which features more natural vistas. The footbridge is also a gateway to more hiking trails which lead to areas like Wolf Willow Ravine. 

More trails and natural vistas are available east of Ramsay Heights in Whitemud Creek Ravine. Popular spots in the ravine include Rainbow Valley Campground and Rainbow Valley Park. Golf enthusiasts in Ramsay are only a few minutes from Edmonton Country Club, a private golf course that offers greens in great shape and a country club with great food. More fun can be had at West Edmonton Mall (the largest mall in North America), situated just a few minutes to the north across the North Saskatchewan River. The mall features food courts, a variety of retail stores, a waterpark, adventure golf, an Ice Palace, Bowling, an underground aquarium and a whole lot more.

Fitness enthusiasts have access to Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre, situated a few blocks away in Leger community. The centre offers programs for people of all ages and features an aquatic centre with a salt-water pool, whirlpool, lazy river and waterslide; a fitness centre with state-of-the-art equipment and indoor jogging/running tracks; 3-full size gyms; 4 NHL-sized ice sheets; indoor playgrounds and a whole lot more.

Ramsay Heights is situated close to some of the best eateries in southwest Edmonton. Just outside the neighbourhood to the southeast, The Bend Lounge is a great neighbourhood pub with delicious food and fresh drinks. Also nearby is Pizza Hut, a popular chain known for their made-to-order delicious pizzas. More eateries are available in the nearby Riverbend Shopping Centre. Oliveto Trattoria features tasty Italian dishes such as pasta, while Curry Corner is an Indian restaurant famous for their butter chicken and other Indian dishes. The centre features fast-food chains like McDonald's, Domino's Pizza, and A&W Canada.
