MacEwan History

MacEwan is named after John Walter Grant MacEwan (1902–2000), a local historian, author, and politician. He served as an alderman, mayor of Calgary, a member of the Legislative Assembly, and as leader of the Alberta Liberal Party. He was the lieutenant-governor of Alberta from 1966 to 1974. He was also a celebrated individual receiving honorary degrees, the Order of Canada in 1975 and the Alberta Order of Excellence in 1982, through the course of his career.

MacEwan was planned under The MacEwan Neighbourhood Area Structure Plan (NASP) approved in 2001. Construction commenced thereafter. Just over half of the residences are single-family homes at 52%, 19% are duplexes, and the remaining 29% are rented apartments and apartment-style condominiums.

MacEwan is bounded on the north by Anthony Henday Drive, south by Ellerslie Road, east by 111 Street and west by 127 Street.

The neighbourhood has one park, MacEwan Park. It features a playground with a variety of equipment, a basketball court, shaded areas with benches and walking trails that connect with other parts of the community including, the stormwater pond.
