History of Downtown
After the first major oil discovery in Alberta on February 13, 1947, Edmonton experienced an oil boom. Most of the oil reserves were situated in central and northern Alberta, making Edmonton the "Oil Capital of Canada". The oil boom led to a drastic increase in population, thus pressuring the city to expand, and areas like Downtown grew to what it is today. Downtown is bounded by 105 Avenue to the North, 109 street to the West, 97 street to the East, 97 Avenue and Rossdale Road to the South, and the North Saskatchewan River to the Southeast.
