Blue Quill History

Blue Quill sits on land annexed to the city of Edmonton in 1971. Being part of the Kaskitayo area, the land served as farmland and home to 18 farmsteads, some of which were still in operation in 1973 when the Kaskitayo Outline plan was being formulated. The majority of the residences (about 60%) were built during the 1970s, and a few (about 25%) were built during the 1980s. Residential construction continued until the early 2000s.

The majority of residences in Blue Quill community are rented apartments in low-rise buildings (about 58%). Single-family homes take up about 27%, while the rest are duplexes and row houses. The neighbourhood is named after Cree Chief Blue Quill of the Saddle Lake Indian Reserve, who was an aboriginal leader within the Kaskitayo area. Blue Quill is bounded by 111 Street to the east, 23 Avenue to the south, 119 Street to the west and north by Saddleback Road and Sweet Grass neighbourhood.
