Balwin History

During the early 20th century, Balwin used to be known as Packingtown, as it was home to workers who worked in the area's meatpacking plants. The area was annexed by the city of Edmonton in 1912.

About 6% of the residences were constructed prior to the end of World War II. The rest of the construction occurred between 1946 to 1981. The community is represented by the Balwin community league, established in 1962. The name Balwin is derived from the names of former property owners in the area, Frank Ball and Luke Winterburn.
