Balwin is an established community situated in northeast Edmonton. The neighbourhood dates back to before the end of World War II, when construction began. Balwin real estate is mostly made up of single-family homes and a few duplexes and row houses. Balwin History
During the early 20th century, Balwin used to be known as Packingtown, as it was home to workers who worked in the area's meatpacking plants. The area was annexed by the city of Edmonton in 1912.
About 6% of the residences were constructed prior to the end of World War II. The rest of the construction occurred between 1946 to 1981. Single-family homes take up the majority of the homes with about 60%, while rented apartments in low-rise buildings take up about 20%. The rest are a few row houses and duplexes.
The community is represented by the Balwin community league, established in 1962. The name Balwin is derived from the names of former property owners in the area, Frank Ball and Luke Winterburn.

Balwin offers plenty of recreational opportunities. The community has three parks, Balwin Park (the largest), Zoie Gardener Park and Ralph Hopp Park.
Baldwin Park features tennis courts, a community hall, playgrounds, a basketball court and an outdoor rink, all of which are maintained by the Balwin community league. The park also features plenty of green space for picnics and other activities.
